Biography

Gerhard Haidacher, who was born in Innsbruck, competed for about 10 years at the top level in bobsledding. As a good sprinter with a personal best of 10.67 for 100 metres he was a perfect crew member. In the Austrian gold medal winning 4-man bob at the 1992 Winter Olympics he held the second position behind the driver Ingo Appelt. Haidacher was also an important part of the success as he was a qualified carpenter and cabinet maker and spent a lot of time with Appelt to improve the bob. When Appelt retired right after the Olympics, Haidacher changed to an other Austrian bob and won silver in the same year at the European Championships in Königssee together with Hubert Schösser and the non-Olympians Hannes Conti and Martin Riedl. The following year Haidacher was a member of the team (with Hubert Schösser, Gerhard Redl, and Harald Winkler) that won silver at the 1993 World Championships in Igls and bronze at the 1993 European Championship in St. Moritz. This team was unchanged when Haidacher competed in his second Olympics in 1994 finishing in fourth place.

After his retirement Haidacher worked as a management consultant and opened a public house in his hometown of Innsbruck where a bobsled hung over the door. But he also coached youth athletes in his spare time.
