Description

In 1959 Cameroon approached the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for advice concerning the establishment of a National Olympic Committee (NOC). It took four years for plans to reach fruition, with the NOC being formed on 25 May 1963 and receiving IOC recognition on 17 October of the same year at the IOC session in Baden-Baden. Cameroon made its Olympic début in 1964 at Tokyo and has appeared at all Games since. It has attended the Olympic Winter Games only in 2002 with the cross country skier Isaac Menyoli. Cameroon athletes have won five Olympic medals, two in boxing. But the highlight of their Olympic performances have been the gold medal won at Sydney in 2000 by their men’s football (soccer) team, and the gold medals won by Françoise Mbango in the women’s triple jump at Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008.
