Wrestling at the 1992 Summer Olympics

The 1992 Olympic wrestling tournament was held at the Instituto Nacional de Educación Física de Cataluña, which was an indoor venue that was renovated in 1991 in preparation for the 1992 Olympics. Wrestling was the only sport held there.

The wrestling programme was the same as in 1988, with 10 classes in both styles and with the same weight limits, including an upper weight limit of 130 kg (286 lbs) for the heaviest class in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Each class was separated into A and B Groups. Placements were determined by a double elimination tournament within each group, with the top five in each group advancing to placement matches for 1st-10th place.

Since they entered the Olympics in 1952, the Soviet Union had always been the top medal winners in wrestling at the Olympics, save for 1984, when they did not compete. The Soviet Union no longer existed, but their avatar, the Unified Team, was in Barcelona and led the medal list with 16, and won the most gold medals, with six. They also won the most medals in both styles, with seven freestyle medals and nine Greco-Roman medals. In terms of gold medals, the Unified Team and the United States both won three freestyle events, while the Unifieds won 3 Greco-Roman golds, followed by Hungary, with 2 Greco golds.
