Greg Foster had won the 1983, 1987, and 1991 World Championships, but his Olympic travails continued and he did not make the US team. The favorite was Canadian Mark McKoy, the 1982 and 1986 Commonwealth Games champion. His training partner was the 1988 silver medalist, Colin Jackson of Britain, who ran 13.10 in round one. But Jackson injured his ribs in the quarter-final and although he made the final, he was not in the medal race. McKoy led the final from the start and won quite easily over Tony Dees (USA).
