All-Around, Individual (5 events), Men

Date25 – 26 April 1906
StatusIntercalated
LocationPanathinaiko Stadio, Athina
Participants37 from 8 countries
FormatMaximum score of 100 for scores from 0-20 on horizontal bars, parallel bars, horse vault, rings and combined high and long jump.

The individual five event all-around consisted of performances on the horizontal bars, parallel bars, horse vault, rings, and a combined high and long jump event. There was some criticism given to the officials because three full minutes were awarded to each gymnast to complete each exercise. In the five event all-around, there were 37 competitors. The maximum possible score was 100, with a maximum of 20 given for each event. According to the rules, all athletes with scores between 90 and 100 were considered to have won first place, and all athletes with scores between 80 and 90 were considered to have won second place. Thus, in this event, we have the unusual situation of 14 athletes “tied” for first place, with scores between 90 and 100. There were 13 athletes “tied” for second place, even though the highest scoring of those athletes trailed 14 other athletes. Of the 37 original competitors, only seven were considered to have not finished first or second. The highest scoring gymnast in this event was the Frenchman Pierre Payssé.
