FormatScoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall. Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler.

This class was completely open, with no medalists from recent major internationals competing. It also turned out to be quite controversial. After four rounds five wrestlers remained with Yugoslavian Branko Martinović having a bye in round five, which advanced him to the final round. When Sweden Gustav Freij won by decision over Czechoslovak Karel Matoušek, both were eliminated on bad points. The other match was Soviet Avtandil Koridze against Bulgarian Dimitar Stoyanov. Koridze could advance by a win, while Stoyanov had to win by fall. Midway through the match the two spoke briefly and then Stoyanov stopped fighting and lost a decision, moving Koridze into the final round. Koridze then won a decision over Martinović to win the gold medal. After a Yugoslavian protest, Stoyanov was disqualified, but no sanction was taken against Koridze and the final results stood.
