Biography

Orwar Lindwall began his fencing career when he was 11-years-old in 1952, winning his first Swedish title in the foil in 1958. During the first half of the 1960s Lindwall won further gold medals at the national championships, including an individual épée title, along with two foil team titles and two team épée titles. From 1959 to 1961 he competed at the World Junior Championships, winning a bronze medal at the latter.

In 1960 Lindwall made his first of three appearances at the Olympics when he took part in the individual foil and team épée at the Roma Games. In the former he won two of his five matches, but did not progress from his pool, whilst in the team event Sweden tied for fifth. In 1961 he competed at the World Fencing Championships in Torino, where he won bronze in the épée team event. One year later Sweden went one better at the next World Championships, winning silver in Buenos Aires.

Lindwall returned to the Olympics in 1964 for the Tokyo Games, where he just missed out on a medal after finishing fourth in the team épée. He also had his best individual performance at the Olympics, finishing seventh in the individual épée. His third and final Olympics came in 1968 in Mexico City where he once again competed in the individual and team épée events, finishing 17th and ninth, respectively. During the individual event Lindwall was hampered when he dislocated his shoulder during the competition.

In 1973 Lindwall graduated as a fencing master before studying sports teaching from 1976 to 1978. Towards the end of his active fencing career he had also begun to work as a coach, leading the national team at five Olympics from 1972 to 1992.
