Arthur Lyon fenced all three weapons at the 1920 Olympics, the last American ever to do so. In the sabre team event, he defeated Arie de Jong of the Netherlands, third in the sabre individual that year, and later, a world champion. Lyon was a member of the New York Fencer’s Club and the New York AC. He won the AFLA national championship in sabre individual in 1917 and 1919 and was a member of three national championship teams. In 1923, Robert H. E. Grasson presented twin cups to the Intercollegiate Fencing Association (IFA) for the épée team and sabre team championships. The sabre team cup carries a relief of Lyon, with the legend Arthur S. Lyon – America’s Greatest Sabre Fencer.
