Description

Known as Ivory Coast until October 1985, Côte d’Ivoire formed a National Olympic Committee (NOC) on 11 September 1962, which was recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 17 October 1963 at the IOC session in Baden-Baden. Côte d’Ivoire has competed in the Olympic Games since 1964, missing only the 1980 Games, although it joined the 1976 African boycott, but only after a few of its athletes had competed. The country has not yet appeared at the Olympic Winter Games.

Côte d’Ivoire won its first Olympic medal, a silver by Gabriel Tiacoh in the 400 metres (track & field athletics) in 1984. In 2016 it won its first gold medal, when Cheick Sallah Cissé won the welterweight class in taekwondo. In the same year Ruth Gbagbi won bronze in the women’s taekwondo welterweight class to become the first female medalist for her country. She would repeat the bronze five years later, at Tokyo 2020, in the same weight class.

In 1977 the Olympic Committee of Cote d’Ivoire was awarded with the Olympic Cup.
