Fencing at the 1972 Summer Olympics

At the Munich Olympics the fencing contests took place at the two fencing halls (Fechthalle 1 and Fechthalle 2) on the Messegelände complex. The eight gold medals available were shared equally between four nations, Hungary, the USSR, Italy and Poland with Hungary being the most successful in terms of total medals with eight. Witold Woyda of Poland and Hungary’s Csaba Fenyvesi were the individual standout performers with a pair of gold medals apiece.

The massacre of Israeli athletes during the Games affected the world of fencing through the death of coach Andre Spitzer.
