Format	Scoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall (win by fall-0; win by decision-1; draw-2; loss by decision-3; loss by fall-4). Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

Hungarian Imre Polyák was the favorite, having won a silver medal in the class at Helsinki in 1952 and Melbourne in 1956, and the World Championship in 1955 and 1958. Both of his World titles came over Turkey’s Müzahir Sille, who was also present in Roma. Another contender was Soviet Konstantin Vyrupayev, the bantamweight gold medalist in 1956. After five rounds, only Polyák and Sille remained, with Polyák having only 3 bad points to Sille’s 5. In the final round, however, Sille won a close decision to take the gold medal in an upset, leaving Polyák with his third consecutive silver medal. Vyrupayev and Italy’s Umberto Trippa were tied after five rounds with 6 bad points, but Vyrupayev had defeated Trippa by decision, which gave him the bronze medal.

Polyák was not done and would win the gold medal in this class at Tokyo in 1964, after winning the 1962 World Championship, defeating Vyrupayev in the final round. Sille moved to Germany in 1961 where he competed for KSV Witten 07, but he never competed internationally again.
