Larry Myricks had won the 1979 World Cup with 8.52 (27-11½), the second longest jump ever, defeating East Germany’s Lutz Dombrowski in the process. But the American boycott meant Dombrowski did not have to face Myricks. He also did not face a young American long jumper named Carl Lewis, who also made the default US Olympic team. In their absence, Dombrowski was the heavy favorite, especially as the next best European jumper, Nenad Stekić (YUG), was injured and could not compete either. In their absence, Dombrowski won easily. His series was quite impressive, and would have made things very difficult for Myricks or Lewis. His winning mark was 8.54 (28-0¼) – the second legal mark over 28 feet, but he also jumped 8.34 (27-4½), 8.32 (27-3¾), 8.21 (26-11¼), and 8.15 (26-9), with one foul. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was revealed that Dombrowski was an informant for the Stasi, the East German secret police.
