East German women would win the 100 metre freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly events in Montréal, and they brought out those swimmers for the medley relay. It resulted in a crushing victory over the United States, as the GDR recorded a time of 4:07.95, a full 5½ seconds better than the listed world record, and 6.6 seconds ahead of the Americans. On each leg of the race, the fastest time was set by one of the East German swimmers.
