Biography

Vilém Goppold z Lobsdorfu, Sr. competed for Bohemia in fencing at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics. He was a member of CSK Riegel. He was Bohemian champion with the sabre in 1909-10 and 1913. At the nationals he was also second in the foil in 1911-12 and with the sabre in 1911. Two of his sons, Vilém, Jr. and Karel, also fenced for Bohemia at the 1912 Olympics. He and Vilém, Jr. were later estranged after the son settled in Germany, took the name Wilhelm, and helped the Germans during World War II.
