Biography

Phil Rogers was a breaststroker who swam at three Olympic Games. He made the finals of both breaststroke events at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, winning bronze in the 100 in 1992, and he added another bronze medal in the 1996 medley relay. Rogers trained at the South Australia Sport Institute, where he was coached by Glenn Beringen.

Rogers won 24 Australian long-course titles and 24 short-course titles, and was selected four times as Australian breaststroker of the year. He won multiple international medals, including gold medals in the medley relay at both the 1998 and 2001 World Championships. Rogers was the first Australian to compete at four World Championships, in 1991, 1994, 1998, and 2001. He was most prolific at the Pan Pacific Championships, winning 11 medals, with gold medals in both breaststroke events in 1993. He was a four-time gold medalist at the World Short-Course Championships, winning the 200 breaststroke in 1993 and 1999, the 100 breaststroke in 1993, and swimming on the winning medley relay team in 1997. At the Commonwealth Games Rogers won five medals with two golds in 1994 in the 100 breaststroke and the medley relay.

Rogers set Australian records at all three breaststroke distances (50, 100, 200) over both long- and short-course. For his multiple titles and records, Rogers received the Order of Australia Medal for his services to swimming. He was voted South Australian Sports Star of the Year in 1993.
