Three of the medalists at the 1982 World Championships came from Soviet-bloc nations, which decimated this class. The two favorites were American Frank Tate and Canadian Shawn O’Sullivan, who had split two fights with one another in the run-up to the Olympics. They made the final, but not without judging controversies. In the second round, Tate fought Lotfi Ayed, a Tunisian-born Swede, and Ayed staggered him and seemingly won the fight, but Tate was given what seemed to be a hometown unanimous decision. O’Sullivan’s difficult fight came in the semi-finals agains France’s Christophe Tiozzo. Tiozzo seemingly won by a 3-2 vote of the judges. But the rules in 1984 stated that all 3-2 decisions had to be reviewed by the jury, and the jury voted for O’Sullivan, 4-1, reversing the decision. The final seemed to go O’Sullivan’s way, as he twice forced standing eight counts in the second round. But Tate won another inexplicable unanimous decision. He then turned professional and won multiple world crowns through 1998, both in the middleweight and light-heavyweight divisions, finishing with a career record of 41 wins and 5 losses. O’Sullivan also turned pro, but with much less success. He fought through 1992, coming back briefly in 1996-97, never getting a world title shot, and ending his career with 23 wins and 5 losses. Tiozzo also turned pro, holding the WBA super middleweight crown in 1991-92.
