Olympic Record (Ranking Round, 72 arrows) | 687 WR / Im Dong-Hyeon KOR / 12 August 2004 |
The 2008 ranking round had an unusual flavor at the top as Mexico’s Juan René Serrano led, followed by India’s Mangal Singh and the Ukrainian Viktor Ruban, as 2007 World Champion Im Dong-Hyeon placed only eighth. Im would go out in round three, losing to 2000 silver medalist Vic Wunderle. With Im eliminated, the favorite became his teammate Park Gyeong-Mo, who was leading the 2008 World Cup (along with Im) at the time of the Beijing Olympics. Park made it to the final, where he faced Ruban. The two were tied after 11 arrows, 103-103, but Ruban won the gold medal with a perfect 10 on his final arrow, winning 113-112. Despite dominating the sport since the late 1980s, this continued the Korean gold medal shut-out in the Olympic men’s individual event.
