Wolfgang Kindl was the 2017 World Champion in the men singles, followed by Roman Repilov (RUS), and Dominik Fischnaller (ITA). Semyon Pavlichenko (RUS) won the European championship three weeks before the Olympics, ahead of Felix Loch (GER) and Repilov.

Loch, champion at both Vancouver and Sochi, was the heavy favorite and was also in the lead after three runs, but he then made a huge mistake in the fourth run and dropped down to fifth place. David Gleirscher (AUT) was a surprise winner after four good runs, although he had actually never before been on the podium in a World Cup race. Chris Mazdzer (USA) in second was also a big surprise, winning his first global medal in singles. The race for the bronze was very close but, even after the best time in the fourth run, Fischnaller had to settle for fourth place, as Jo Ludwig (GER) won the bronze.
