Format	Round-robin qualifying pools, followed by single-elimination tournament.

Deng Yaping had won the 1991 World Championships, was ranked #1 in the world, and was favored, despite her diminutive height of only 1.49 [4-10½]. Thru the round-robin pools and first three rounds of elimination, she won all her matches in straight games. In the final, she faced her doubles partner, Qiao Hong. They had won the doubles gold medal two days earlier. Deng crushed Qiao, 21-6, 21-8, in the first two games of the final, but then lost her first game of the Olympics, 15-21. However, she came back from a deficit in the fourth game to secure the gold medal, 23-21. This was the ninth straight title in the Olympics or Worlds by Chinese women.
