There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. The 1984 gold medal was shared by Japan’s Koji Gushiken and China’s Li Ning. Li won three apparatus golds in Los Angeles, adding floor exercise and pommelled horse golds, and won six medals in all in 1984. Gushiken was the individual all-around champion in 1984 but this was his only other gold, among the five medals he won. American Mitch Gaylord won the bronze medal, one of three apparatus medals he won in 1984, along with a gold medal in the team event for the USA.
