Ingemar Stenmark was heavily favored. He had won the World Cup title every year since 1975 in GS, and was the 1978 World Champion in both slalom and giant slalom. One of the few Lapps, or Samis, to become a world-class athlete, Stenmark was considered the best technical skier in the world. On the first run, Stenmark appeared tentative and was placed only third, trailing the leader, Liechtenstein’s Andreas Wenzel, and the silver medalist at the 1978 Worlds. But his second run was dominant, besting Switzerland’s Jacques Lüthy by almost a full second, and it brought Stenmark the expected gold medal. Wenzel hung on for the silver, with the bronze going to Austria’s Hans Enn.
