The only-seeded player to be eliminated at the group stage was Tai Tzu-Ying (TPE), the number three seed and player ranked third in the world, who lost to Ratchanok Intanon (THA) by a score of 21-19, 21-15. It meant that Intanon gained a bye into the quarter-finals. Again, players from Asian countries dominated the group winners, the only exceptions being fourth-seeded Carolina Marín (ESP) and Beiwen Zhang (USA).

The top two seeds An Se-Yeong (KOR) and Chen Yufei (CHN), along with Intanon, had byes into the quarter-finals. In the round of 16, there were no surprises, with the higher ranked players all winning against their lower ranked opponents, the highlights arguably being the victory of Aya Ohori (JPN) over Yeo Jia Min (SGP) by 11-21, 21-14, 24-22, and, having lost the first set, Carolina Marín was made to work to defeat Beiwen Zhang 12-21, 21-9, 21-18. Akane Yamaguchi (JPN), Gregoria Mariska Tunjung (INA), and He Bingjiao (CHN) completed the quarter-final line-up.

The only match involving three games in the quarter-finals was between An and Yamaguchi, the number one seed finally overcoming her opponent 15-21, 21-17, 21-8 after a 74-minute contest. In the other quarter finals, Tunjung defeated her unseeded opponent Intanon, Carolina Marín overcoming Aya Ohori, and, in an all-Chinese contest, He Bingjiao had the better of her compatriot Chen Yufei.

The first semi-final was another thrilling victory for An over Tunjung by 11-21, 21-13, 21-16. However, the second semi-final saw heartache for Carolina Marín. Leading comfortably (21-14, 10-5) against her opponent He Bingjiao, she landed awkwardly following a rally. Whilst she had her leg strapped, she was unable to continue much longer and Marín was forced to retire when leading 21-14, 10-8.

Sadly, Marín’s injury prevented her from contesting the bronze medal match, so Tunjung was awarded the medal via a walkover. The final itself resulted in a comfortable victory for top seed An as she defeated He by 21-13, 21-16.
