The favorites were Zhao Jianhua (CHN), who was World Champion in 1991 and won the All-England title in 1985 and 1990, Indonesia’s Ardy Bernardus Wiranata, the 1991 All-England Champion, and Denmark’s Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen, the 1992 European Champion. Zhao lost in the quarter-finals in three games to Hermawan Susanto (INA), and Høyer-Larsen also went out in the quarters, to Wiranata. The final was an all-Indonesian affair, as all three Indonesian entrants had made the semis, with Wiranata facing Alan Budikusuma, which Budikusuma won in two straight games. Budikusuma’s girlfriend, Susi Susanti Haditono, also won the women’s singles gold medal. The two titles were the first gold medals ever for Indonesia at the Olympics. One losing semi-finalist and bronze medalist was Denmark’s Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen, which was the only badminton medal won by a non-Asian in 1992.
