With the Eastern Europeans boycotting, the field was weakened, primarily by the absence of world record holder Marita Koch. The favorite was Jamaica’s Merlene Ottey, the 1982 Commonwealth Games champion. The final was led on the curve by Florence Griffith with Ottey second at the straight. But the race was won by Valerie Brisco-Hooks, a 200/400 runner, who used her strength to pull away in the last 50 metres. She had already won gold in the 400 and became the first athlete to win the 200/400 double at the same Olympics.
