Heading into the 2024 Paris Olympics, China’s Liu Yang and Zou Jingyuan were considered the top contenders for gold in the men’s rings. Liu looked to defend his title from Tokyo and was also the reigning World Champion. Zou was better known for his parallel bars exploits (Olympic Champion in 2020 and 2024) but had won silver on rings at the 2022 Worlds. With two recent World Champions, İbrahim Çolak (2019) and Adem Asil (2022), Türkiye also had two medal contenders. Greece’s Lefteris Petrounias, the 2016 Olympic champion, remained a formidable challenger, although he had announced he would retire after the Games.
The two Chinese competitors led the field in qualifying, both producing scores above 15 points, with Zou (15.300) ahead of Liu (15.233). In the final, with the two Chinese gymnasts going first, things were exactly the other way round. This time it was Liu with 15.300, ahead of Zou (15.233). Two other gymnasts reached 15 points, but could not match the Asians. Petrounias narrowly edged out his friend and home favorite Samir Aït Saïd for the bronze. With his gold, Liu Yang became the first repeat Olympic champion on rings since Akinori Nakayama in 1972-76. Zou’s silver meant China placed 1-2 in the event for the third time, and second time consecutively.
