Going into the Olympics, the US was again considered dominant, led by Michael Johnson and Harry (Butch) Reynolds. But Johnson injured himself in winning the 200 and Reynolds slowed with an injury in his 400 semi and they would not run the relay. The US was still considered the favorite but the race was open, with Great Britain and Jamaica considered challengers. Kenya was also highly considered but injuries prevented them starting the final. In the final, the US was given a slight lead by LaMont Smith on the opener. The last three American runners, Alvin Harrison, Derek Mills, and Anthuan Maybank, all ran their splits under 44 seconds but the race remained close throughout, as Great Britain would not go away. Eventually the US won the gold medal by five metres as both Maybank and Britain’s Roger Black ran 43.87 on the anchor legs.
