Biography

Hubert van Blijenburgh, an officer in the army as all Dutch fencers of his time, never achieved major successes individually, but won four bronze fencing medals at the Olympics. In his position as the head of the naval sports school in Den Helder, he had great influence on the way gymnastics was taught in the Netherlands. He wrote several books on gymnastics and physical education, and was the first Dutchman to gain a PhD in physical education.
