Held as the fourth women’s Alpine skiing event the giant slalom took place in Cortina. The ongoing giant slalom World Cup had seen eight races with half of them being won by Austrian Julia Scheib. After winning the season opener in Sölden and also in Tremblant 2, Semmering, and Kronplatz she was in the lead of the ongoing giant slalom World Cup standings. Right behind her was Switzerland’s Camille Rast (one win in Kranjska Gora), Sara Hector (SWE) (one win in the last event before the Games in Špindlerův Mlýn), Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) (2023 World Champion and 2018 Olympic Champion), and Kiwi Alice Robinson (two season wins in Copper Mountain and Tremblant 1). Returning after an injury was Italian Federica Brignone, 2025 World Champion, giant slalom Crystal Globe winner in 2025, and newly crowned Olympic Super G champion.

Only three days after Brignone’s victory in the Super G she again wrote history. After taking the lead after run one she won her second gold medal of these Games, becoming the first female to win the Super G and giant slalom at the same Olympics. Furthermore, she became the first Alpine skier of any gender to win a full set of Olympic medals in giant slalom, winning bronze in 2018 and silver in 2022, a feat matched only by Italy’s Sofia Goggia one week before in downhill. Brignone also bettered her own age record, as the oldest Alpine skiing gold medalist with 35-216.

In a tie for the silver medal were Sara Hector (SWE) and Thea Stjernesund (NOR) who finished both runs with the exact same time (never done before at the Olympics in any Alpine event) – they were tied for fourth after the first run. The season winners finished behind the podium with Scheib in 5th, Robinson 8th, Shiffrin 11th, and Rast in 12th. Brignone and Stjernesund gave Rossignol a one-two finish and Hector gave Head another medal with silver.
