Australian Tom Slingsby had been favored at Beijing in 2008 but struggled throughout and failed to even make the medal race. By the time of the London Olympics, Slingsby had won five World titles and was heavily favored. He quickly moved ahead on the first day, placing first and second in the two races, but on the second day, Cypriot Pavlos Kontides won both races and took the lead the next day. But Slingsby came back to win the final three races of the opening series and took a 14-point lead into the medal race. He then controlled Kontides in the medal race, working it as a match race from the pre-start and easily won the gold medal, Kontides taking silver, which was the first ever Olympic medal won for Cyprus. Sweden’s Rasmus Myrgren was third after the opening series and his sixth place in the medal race held that spot for him, as he won the bronze medal.
