The favorite was Clarence “Arni” Robinson. But in the qualifying his teammate, Randy Williams, set a world junior record with 8.34 (27-4½) to lead the qualifiers. Thru 2008, this has stood as the world junior record. In the final, Williams opened with 8.24 (27-0½) and that was good enough for the gold medal. Robinson was at less than his best, finally getting 8.03 (26-4¼) in the fifth round for the bronze medal. German favorite Hans Baumgartner was a surprise silver medalist.
