FormatRound-robin pools, followed by round-robin medal round. Canada directly placed for medal round.

A group of graduate students from the University of Toronto won the 1928 Allan Cup finals, and was chosen to form the Canadian ice hockey team for the St. Moritz Winter Olympics. Because of the Canadian dominance in the sport, they were advanced directly to the medal round, while the other 10 teams played a series of round-robin pools to decide the three teams that would face the Canadians. Eventually, the medal pool consisted of Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, and Great Britain. Canada dominated the competition, defeating Sweden 11-0, Great Britain 14-0, and Switzerland 13-0 – finishing the Winter Olympics without surrendering a goal. The Canadians were coached by Conn Smythe, later the principal owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and after whom the Conn Smythe Trophy, given to the MVP in the Stanley Cup playoffs, is named. He is also remembered because one of the four NHL Divisions is named after him, the Smythe Division. Due to some political infighting among US ice hockey administrators, no United States ice hockey team competed in the 1928 Olympic Winter Games.
