Chile (CHI)

Chile’s initial Olympic appearance came in 1912. Since that time, it has missed only the Olympic Games of 1932 and 1980. Chile formed its National Olympic Committee in 1934 and was recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the same year. Chilean athletes have won 13 Olympic medals, two gold (both in 2004), seven silver and four bronze.

Tennis player Fernando González has won three Olympic medals, one of each color, the most by any Chilean Olympian. In 2004, Chile won gold in men’s singles and doubles tennis, with Nicolás Massú winning the singles, and partnering with González to win in the doubles. Óscar Cristi is the only other Chilean athlete with more than one medal, by winning two silvers at the 1952 equestrian jumping events.

Chile first competed at the Olympic Winter Games of 1948 and has participated at most subsequent Olympic Winter Games, missing those of 1972 and 1980, and appearing at 18 Winter celebrations overall. To date, they have competed only in skiing-related disciplines – Alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, and freestyle skiing.

Through 2022, Chile has had 53 Winter Olympians, 42 men and 11 women. Their best finish was 11th by Thomas Grob in 1998 Alpine skiing combined. The best Chilean finish by a woman at the Olympic Winter Games was 13th, by Dominique Ohaco in 2014 slopestyle freestyle skiing. Through 2022, two Chilean Alpine skiers, one man and one woman, have competed at four Olympic Winter Games: Nils Linneberg competed in 1988, 1992, 1994, and 1998, while Noelle Barahona competed in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018.
